Seldovia Bay Ferry Continues Service Into October

by Ian McGaughey

Seldovia Bay FerryThe Seldovia Bay Ferry is continuing operations, providing round trips between Seldovia and Homer twice a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“As long as there are passengers to support it and weather to accommodate the service, the Seldovia Bay Ferry will continue to run,” Seldovia Village Tribe President and CEO Crystal Collier said. “The loss of the Tustumena has had a significant impact on Seldovia. We’re pleased to offer this extended schedule as a service to our community.”

Operating Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the Seldovia Bay Ferry’s Kachemak Voyager departs Seldovia for the 45-minute trip at 9:00am and 4:30pm, and departs Homer (Ramp 7) at 11:00am and 6:30pm. Passengers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before departure, more if transporting freight.

Tickets can be purchased right on the vessel—reservations are not required. One-way tickets are $33 per person, plus taxes. For more information, please visitseldoviabayferry.com or call (907) 435-3299.

AMHS BannerAd 220x90I just received word from the Seldovia City office (thanks to Jen Giles) that the Kennicott is approximately 30 hours behind schedule due to high winds and hazardous seas out by Unalaska.

Please take note of the following changes to the upcoming arrival and departure times for Seldovia.

The scheduled sailing for Saturday, September 28th has been cancelled and rescheduled for Monday, September 30th arriving at 12:45 AM and departing at 2:00 AM.

The scheduled sailing for Saturday, October 5th has also been cancelled and rescheduled for Monday, October 7th arriving at 1:30 PM and departing at 2:45 PM.

The hope is that the Kennicott will be back on her regular schedule by the Saturday, October 12th sailing.  Please take note, and be sure to contact the city office or AMHS main office to confirm your sailing date and reservations.  Obviously, we will be hoping to see the Tusty back in Seldovia – maybe by the end of October?

Last summer, our youngest daughter, Dakota, signed me up as a host with WWOOF USA, World wide opportunities on organic farms, wwoofusa.org.  When Dakota graduated from Cornell she decided to ride her bike across America, so she drug her bike across the sand, dipped her foot into the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island and began her journey to the Pacific Ocean.  She found her lodgings at the WWOOF site, emailing ahead to see if they could use some help, trading a days labor for room and board.  She fell in love with growing and had many amazing experiences along the way.

Last fall I hosted my first wwoofer, Eva from Norway who stayed with us for two weeks.  It is sort of like hosting an exchange student, they are here to experience Alaska, some have a background in growing and others are just willing to learn.

This summer we have hosted eleven wwoofers from France, Homer, Isle of Man, Connecticut, Continue Reading

Working for Transportation Solutions

In the news…

HomerNewsAssemblyArticleOur city Manager, Tim Dillon (also chairman of the Alaska Municipal League’s Transportation committee) was quoted in this article in the Homer News, regarding the Tusty’s, once again, delayed return to service for Seldovia.

Please click here or on the image to the left, to go directly to the Homer News and read the entire article about the Assembly meeting concerning coastal community transportation – serious issues that affect our waterfront/off-the-road-system communities.

Thanks Tim for speaking on our behalf and keeping Seldovia’s needs in the forefront of the minds of the state’s decision makers!  Since being without the Tustumena since November of 2012, we have truly felt the negative impact of the lack of service to Seldovia.  Thankfully, our dock is big enough, and port – deep enough to welcome the Kennicott, or we would have been completely without service like many other communities on the route.

Being Prepared

As residents of the Kenai Peninsula, we know that disasters can happen at any time.  September is National Preparedness Month, and it is a good time to prepare yourself and those in your care for emergencies and disasters. In just the past week we have seen disasters in Colorado as the result of flooding, which we saw locally here last fall.  Combine that with volcanoes, earthquakes, and winter weather and we have a high likelihood of experiencing emergencies here on the Kenai.

Communities like Seldovia that are off the road system have additional considerations because of the logistics of receiving supplies and a smaller resource pool of responders to draw from.  Police, fire and rescue may not always be able to reach you quickly in an emergency or disaster. The most important step you can take in helping your local responders is being able to take care of yourself and those in your care; the more people who are prepared, the quicker the community will recover.

Borough Mayor Mike Navarre recently proclaimed September as Disaster Preparedness Month on the Kenai Peninsula.  We would encourage everyone to Continue Reading
