Does midnight sound too late to get bundled up, gather sleeping children and make your way to the airport for a New Year’s Eve Fireworks show?

Well, it has become an issue for a few folks, either those who are early to go to bed, or parents with small children, that midnight is a challenge – so, Alvin and the pyrotechnic team have decided to hold the event early!  This year, after many many years of traditionally holding this event at midnight, we are going to ring in the New Year in Seldovia at 9pm at the Seldovia airport!  When I spoke with Alvin tonight, he commented:

“Many have come to me over the past years, and again this year, saying that they would like us to consider holding the event earlier, so children can enjoy it and be a part of the celebration, as well as some adults who prefer to get to bed earlier.  Also, this is better for those who like to party on New Year’s Eve, as they aren’t out drinking and driving around at midnight to go to the fireworks show.  After the show, they can head back to their homes or the Linwood and continue their party.  They pay for it, and I’m happy to give it a try this year.  We will see how it goes.”

So, gather your family and friends and join us all out at the airport for a great fireworks display with the community of Seldovia at 9:00pm!  Thanks again to Alvin and the Fireworks Team for planning, prepping and performing this great show for us each year!

Once again:

LBC to Discuss Seldovia Annexation Issue, What do you think?

| December 27, 2013 | 0 Comments

I received word from Timothy J. Dillon, Seldovia’s city manager, that the meeting date for the next LBC (Local Boundary Commission) meeting was just confirmed, and will be held on January 16, 2014 at 10:00am.   For more information, you can call:  (907) 269-4559   Interested parties can attend in person, or telephonically.

Brent Williams from the Local Boundary Commission wrote:

“An agenda item will be a discussion of Mr. Lethin’s request that the LBC use its constitutional authority to proactively initiate the process of annexing territory to the city, without a petition from the city. The LBC chair added this request as a discussion item to the meeting’s agenda. This will simply be a discussion item at the meeting, not an action item. If you have any questions, please let us know.”

If you were in attendance at the last City Council meeting, you were witness to the many Seldovians who expressed opposition to this idea.  I took note that out of the 30 public folks in attendance, 16 stated verbally that they were opposed to the idea, there wasn’t anyone in the crowd who expressed that they believed it was a good action to take, and three individuals desired to know more prior to making a decision about their position.  As Mayor Gain went down the list of attendees to see if individuals from the public wished to speak, there were 11 folks who stated “No Comment”.

Numerous members of the public expressed that they didn’t understand how an individual can bring such an important issue to the Local Boundary Commission for consideration without having support from the community that is directly affected.   Please let us know what you are thinking and complete the following poll!

If you don’t see the poll “buttons”, hover over the sentence of your selection (the cursor will change to a pointing hand), and click to select it, then click VOTE to see all responses.

Meet the New Owners of Seldovia’s Boardwalk Hotel

| December 23, 2013

by Jenny Chissus

I wanted to take a moment to introduce a new family to you!  The Campbells have purchased the Seldovia Boardwalk Hotel, and they are going full-out to make this hotel “The place to be” in Seldovia!  Enjoy this interview, and when you see the family about town – please extend a warm welcome!  It is so exciting to see another business in Seldovia!

DSC_0280Gazette:  First – we would all like to welcome you to Seldovia!  I’ve heard from a number of folks about how great it is to see some activity at the hotel – lights on, and people coming and going and the anticipation of a grand opening in the Spring!  Can you introduce yourselves, who you are, where you currently live?

Jeremiah: Thanks Jenny.  We are Jeremiah and Angela Campbell.  We both grew up, and lived most of our lives in Seward.  We moved up to Eagle River about two years ago due to my job.

Gazette:  What is your business experience, and why did you decide to take on a hotel in Seldovia?

Jeremiah:  We have been involved in a number of businesses over the last 20 years.  Some things we have enjoyed and others not so much.  We were partners in a custom seafood processing and fish smoking business back in the early 90’s.  We also opened a small seafood fish & chips restaurant as a compliment to the seafood Continue Reading

Christmas Cat Needs to Find His Way Home

| December 19, 2013 | 0 Comments

by Jenny Chissus

This gray and white cat with white paws and a white nose was found “living” in the Carluccio’s warehouse!  They suspected a critter when seeing their garbage can had been raided the other day – and then spotted this little guy!  They set the humane trap for him, and sure enough, the poor guy was hungry enough to get in there!  He is currently being boarded for the night under a “foster care” situation.  Please spread the word, as I’m sure his family wants him home for Christmas!

If you know who’s kitty this is, or if he is yours – please contact Shad Haller – 399-0671 (Police Chief) who will get you in touch with the folks who are temporarily caring for him. (Paulie said that she thinks it was a boy – but she didn’t handle him)  If they can’t find the owner, and you are interested in a kitty, please let Shad know!   I have heard that if they don’t find the owner, they plan on sending him over to the animal shelter in Homer.
