City of Seldovia receives Entry Authorization for 1.2 acres of Jakolof Bay Dock Uplands from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

The City of Seldovia has received Entry Authorization from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for approximately 1.2 acres of the Jakolof Bay Dock Uplands. This authorization marks an important step toward improving public accessibility and access, as well as long-term planning for the uplands area adjacent to the Jakolof Bay Dock.

With the issuance of this pre-lease authorization, the City’s next steps include:

• Completion of a professional land survey to confirm parcel boundaries

• An appraisal of the property

• A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment

• An initial cleanup of the area

These actions will help ensure the site is properly evaluated and prepared for future planning and community use.

Individuals with vehicles parked by Jakolof dock are asked to contact the Seldovia Harbor Office as soon as possible at 907-234-7886 or by email at harbormaster@cityofseldovia.com.

Please provide:

• A description of the vehicle,

• License plate number (if available)

• Current contact information

This information will allow the City to notify vehicle owners of upcoming activity and ensure their vehicles are documented as active users while cleanup efforts commence.

The City of Seldovia appreciates the public’s cooperation and looks forward to working with the community as improvements move forward at the Jakolof Bay Dock Uplands.

Find out how the four-lane design supports safer, more reliable travel on the Seward Highway

| March 2, 2026 | 0 Comments

“Hello, Seward Highway travelers!

The engineers looked at a few different concepts for the Safer Seward Highway project, including keeping it two lanes and increasing to three lanes. After analyzing each option, they recommend a four-lane divided highway as the preferred option. Considering the real impacts construction will have on the community, including beloved climbing routes, why did they choose that option?

Three big reasons: safety, reliability, traffic

SAFETY: Traffic modeling predicts the four-lane option will reduce crashes by nearly 70% and the three-lane option by just under 40%.

RELIABILITY: A four-lane highway will stay open more often during emergencies.

TRAFFIC: The national standards for road design recommend four lanes on this section of the Seward Highway based on projected peak traffic levels (up to 1,469 vehicles per hour) for the end of this project’s design life, 25 years. The guidance advises against a three-lane layout once traffic exceeds about 1,200 vehicles per hour in one direction.

Want to dig into the details? Here are a few links to check out:
