Kennicott Docks Port Side

Kennicott Docks at Port SideToday, the Kennicott came in forward to our dock in Seldovia.  Living directly across from the Ferry Dock, this was an unusual sight! Apparently, the starboard door is not functioning, so the ship needed to dock on the port side – which obviously limits the ability for larger vehicles to embark or disembark.  The end of our pier doesn’t have enough room to maneuver for larger vehicles.

Fortunately, because of a group effort, the Crabpot Grocery’s delivery was made possible with the help from three smaller trucks!  They had to fly in their perishables to preserve the quality – so stop by the Crabpot and support our local grocer who had to jump through extra hoops today!

Seldovia Chamber Readies to Print Member’s Walking Map

| January 23, 2013 | 0 Comments

Dear Seldovian:

2012 Chamber-brochure-coverTo all the business members of Seldovia, it is time to pay membership dues for 2013.  The deadline is  February 15, 2013 to be in the 2013 Walking Map/Brochure.  Dues are $75.00 per business, $25 for non-business individual, and if you have a second business, they can be listed on the walking map for an additional $20, but they do not have membership.

Your membership presents business opportunity
Seldovia has been getting a lot of great exposure.  For example: there has been a lot of exciting and recent publicity for Seldovia with Discovery’s channel Destination America’s new show “Buying Alaska” – as two of the ten episodes have featured Seldovia very prominently.  Also, Kenai Heli Ski is opening this winter and putting forth a ton of great advertising for winter skiing in our mountains!  Seldovia is in the news and media we are fortunate to get the kind of coverage we could never afford to do for ourselves.  Therefore, this is the best time to be active in the chamber as folks are going to be actively looking at Seldovia, and searching for activities around our community.

Business placement on the Walking Map assures your visibility to visitors.
Over 15,000 Walking maps/brochures are printed each year and are circulated throughout Seldovia and the state of Alaska. This is a useful advertising tool, as it is distributed at trade shows, mailed out to inquiries and is readily available in the Seldovia Visitor’s Center, and all businesses for free and easy access to those who visit Seldovia.

2012 Chamber-brochure-DirectoryFree advertising for your business on the Chambers’s web site.
Some people search out various Chamber of Commerce web sites when planning their trip.  Your business is visible and promoted on the Chamber web site which helps the visitor decide on where to stay or simply that Seldovia’s businesses will meet their every need while visiting.

Opportunity to be an active member in the best attended monthly meetings in Seldovia.
The Chamber is active in hosting and organizing various community projects and helps promote its members’ businesses.  It is also a great time to network and visit with other members.

As a non-business individual, becoming a part of our Seldovia Chamber of Commerce offers a way to participate in the discussions surrounding the development and creation of opportunities in our city.   Our chamber looks forward to having individual memberships, as we carefully consider the whole community as we grow as a community.  (individuals not listed in walking map, of course)

2012 Chamber-brochure-MAP-webWe are anticipating a great 2013 and are open to new ideas to further promote our community.

Make your membership check payable to: Seldovia Chamber of Commerce & mail before February 15, 2013  to be included in this year’s walking map/brochure.  There’s opportunity for ads in the brochure also.  If you had an ad last year,  let us know if you want an ad this year!!

Cook Inlet Risk Assessment Seeks Ideas to Lower Risks of Maritime Accidents

Cook Inlet Risk Assessment seeks ideas to lower risks of maritime accidents

The Cook Inlet Risk Assessment Advisory Team is considering risk reduction measures for Cook Inlet and opening the door for the public to weigh in with their ideas. The U. S. Coast Guard, Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation created the Cook Inlet Risk Assessment to analyze the risks associated with marine vessel operations in the inlet and recommend measures to reduce the chances of accidents and resulting oil spills.

A risk reduction measure can be any policy, procedure, rule, equipment, system, or service that would lower the chance of a marine incident or reduce the impact of an incident if it should occur. It can be something fairly obvious or traditional such as a Vessel Traffic System that monitors and controls the movement of vessels transiting Cook Inlet. Or, it may be something less obvious, such as a sub-sea pipeline that would take the place of tankers moving oil across Cook Inlet.

The Advisory Panel will consider all suggestions for further study. A list of some risk reduction measures already slated for consideration is posted on the project website at www.cookinletriskassessment.com. People are invited to submit ideas and/or share their thoughts about the options that have already been suggested.

Ideas for risk reduction measures can be submitted by email to ciracomments@nukaresearch.com, by mail to CIRA Comments, Nuka Research, PO Box 175, Seldovia, AK 99663, or by fax to (240) 394-4855. The deadline for comments is February 4, 2013. The Advisory Panel will meet in late February to consider all suggestions.

The Cook Inlet Risk Assessment project is guided by a Management Team, comprised of the agencies noted above, and an Advisory Panel of 14 stakeholders including mariners, marine pilots, port directors, fishermen, subsistence users, and other experts. Thus far, they have completed three technical studies analyzing the vessel traffic, accident frequencies, and potential consequences from spills.

-END-

Background: The Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council (Cook RCAC), Alaska Department of Environment Conservation and U.S. Coast Guard launched the Cook Inlet Risk Assessment to examine the risk of oil spills posed by the marine vessels transiting through, near and/or servicing the region. The goal of the risk assessment is to answer the following questions:

• What can go wrong?
• How likely is it?
• What are the impacts?
• Can the impacts be mitigated?

The risk assessment is examining the current types and sizes of vessels plying Cook Inlet and dominant accident types and identifying future oil spill risks based on vessel size, type and frequency. The first phase of the risk assessment was limited to a semi-qualitative analysis, relying primarily on historical data, expert opinion, and lessons learned from prior studies. Study results provided a basis for the identification and initial ranking of risk reduction measures.

We have sought extensive stakeholder engagement throughout the process of defining and analyzing risks and identifying risk reduction measures.

Initial funding for the risk assessment was secured through a legislative appropriation by State of Alaska and is being administered by the Kenai Peninsula Borough and Cook Inlet RCAC.
