LibraryNewSpaceThe Seldovia Public Library board is very pleased to announce that the library is expanding into the courtroom space downstairs in the library/multipurpose building.

The downstairs space will house our Alaska collection of adult books, a new computer (or two) received from an Online With Libraries (OWL) grant, as well as our video-teleconference equipment.

Within the coming year, we hope to renovate and furnish this room with new flooring, window treatments, paint, furniture, and improvements to the bookcases. In the meantime, please pardon this room’s appearance as we undergo our “growing pains.”

Rise of the guardians movieposterThis Saturday (the 13th), library staff will be moving our Alaska collection downstairs. If you would like to help, please come to the library at 4:00 pm. The public’s help is always welcomed. Library staff will be showing up a little earlier than this, and board members even earlier, to undergo some training that day.

After an hour of hard work, come sit back, relax, and join us for movie night at 6:15 pm as we watch Rise of the Guardians. Hope to see you there!

Alaska OWL LogoTaken from the OWL site: The Alaska OWL Project is a grant funded initiative designed to improve the computing capabilities of public libraries throughout the state of Alaska. The project is being funded by the United StatesDepartment of Commerce BTOP Initiativethe Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rasmuson Foundationand the Alaska State Library.

Our mission is to provide all Alaskans with the benefits and opportunities that come hand in hand with high speed Internet. This includes areas such as e-government services, distance education opportunities and increased access to professional development.

Alaska OWL Library MapWe are excited to remind Seldovia about the wonderful new equipment and programming that has become available to our community through the program OWL (Online with Libraries) – opening the door of access to experts and educators of many specialties, in culture, arts, history, languages and science among other subjects!  If you check out the map to the left, you can see all the locations in Alaska taking advantage of this great educational program!

George Bush Presidential Library Sorry for the very late notice – but tomorrow morning, the class featured is “Reading Discovery With Barbara Bush” – and actually, one of our very own Seldovian student’s question was selected to be answered by Mrs. Bush during the event!

So, Zack Scribner will be asking Mrs. Bush his question about the book “Capital” tomorrow morning!

Out of our whole countries selections (each school which participates with OWL was allowed to submit 10 questions) only 15 questions were chosen for Mrs. Bush to answer during the teleconference.  So, this is quite an honor!

As this is open to the public, join us tomorrow, Thursday, February 7, 6:45am – 8:15am (Yes, I know it is early!) to get this opportunity to see our new equipment in action, and meet the Former First Lady Mrs. Barbara Bush!  We certainly want to give her a warm hello from Seldovia!

OWL Barbara Bush
Seldovia Public Library
Former First Lady Mrs. Barbara Bush will read excerpts from award-winning author Lynn Curlee’s book, “Capital.” Mrs. Bush will answer questions asked by students during the videoconference. David Ferriero, 10th Archivist of the United States, will give insights about our nation’s capital city. On-stage students as Reading Buddies will share the history of Washington, D.C.’s awe-inspiring monuments from “Capital.” The program concludes with The Quartet of Singing Cadets at Texas A&M University.
