Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

On December 22, around 7:00pm it started to snow!  In the spirit of Christmas, it just kept on snowing!  All night, and then again, all day yesterday!  We had about 9-10 inches by early yesterday morning here in the heart of Seldovia on Main Street.

Most of Sunday, it snowed and snowed!  Though it was a quiet day, and most folks were hunkering down at home, hopefully wrapping presents, sipping hot chocolate or spiced rum, we ran into Matt Gallien at the Fuel and Lube, who had to call in (since the Flube is normally closed on Sundays) to fuel up in order to maintain the streets of town.

The photos below were taken last evening as the Chissus clan went down to manage the boats in the harbor that required shoveling.  The harbor was still, ice on the water and each finger of the dock was completely untouched.  The only other activity in the harbor were otters that had the whole harbor to themselves and had broken through the ice and were swimming about playfully, just watching us breaking through the fresh snow as we trudged from boat to boat.  There was one finger near the end of B dock that the otters had completely cleared off in order to have a place to get up and out of the water.  There was easily over 2 feet of snow on the docks – and boats!

I’ll be heading out today for more photos, as there has been at least 6 more inches since then!  My husband spoke to a few folks out the road this morning, and so far, in the last 24 hours, they have measured over 29 inches of snow!  It is still coming down – and as the article before this one mentioned, we are currently running on generation from the Gerry Willard Generation Plant – so folks out the road are without power on this Christmas eve.   Stay warm everyone – and here’s to a very White Christmas!

“Blessing Boxes” go out to Local Families Today

by Ian McGaughey

BlessingBoxes1On Friday, December 21st at 10:00am at Seldovia Bible Chapel, volunteers continued what has become a Seldovia Christmas tradition. “Blessings Boxes” full of turkeys and items to make a complete Christmas dinner were packed and then distributed to approximately 50 area families.

“This is an effort to minister to the physical food needs of our neighbors while serving the spiritual need of celebrating Christmas,” Pastor Jonathon Hoard said. “We want to share the blessings the Lord has blessed us with.”

Seldovia Village Tribe partnered with Seldovia Bible Chapel to purchase nearly 50 turkeys and other items from Safeway and Country Foods.

BlessingBoxes2“This tradition has been going on for over 20+ years” Seldovia Village Tribe President and CEO Crystal Collier said. “It’s an important part of Christmas, sharing with those in our community.  We thank all those that volunteer to pack boxes and deliver, those that transported the food to Seldovia and Seldovia Bible Chapel for partnering in the joy of this provision.”

BlessingBoxes3Pilot Don Sellinger donated his services flying the roughly 800 pounds of turkey to Seldovia, while Homer Air donated the transport of countless canned goods. Even with all the food, volunteers find room in the Blessing Boxes for a little something extra.

“If we know that there is a child at the residence, we’ll include a toy,” Pastor Hoard said. “We also like to include a small book or DVD that discusses the true meaning of Christmas.”

The Blessing Boxes are a natural extension of services run by both organizations. The Seldovia Bible Chapel has an informal food program based on donations, while Seldovia Village Tribe offers an extensive Food Distribution Program administered by the US Department of Agriculture.

Seldovia-area residents interested in learning more about the Food Bank can contact Debbie Cameron, SVT CHR at 435-3255.

Help Fund the Fabulous Fireworks Celebration to bring in 2013!

Thank you to the many folks who sponsor our annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show!  Every year it is a time when the whole community gathers to bring in the new year together, as friends and family.

The Swicks are leaving the day after Christmas to purchase the fireworks up in Anchorage and are hopeful to have the continued support of the community to make it happen!   This is often a show that lasts over 20 minutes, and costs a pretty penny!  However, if a lot of folks give a little – we can reach the goal.  Typically, the Swicks spend $3,500 to $4,000 to create a spectacular show – and every bit helps!

Enjoy the reminder below of the display we had last year – and a glimpse of the spectacular event we have to look forward to – bringing in 2013!

Please support this great Seldovia tradition, and give a call to Roberta and Alvin Swick 234-7473 before December 26th, 2012!  It is not too late!

Please make sure to catch up with them before they leave on the 26th, as whatever funds they have at that time will be the only budget they will spend for the event.   Thank You so much for being a part of this great celebration!

We’ll see you at the Fireworks Show on December 31st – midnight!
