Food for Community Thought… Do We Need a Doctor in our Clinic?

At the Seldovia City Council meeting on February 12, 2014 Dr. Reynolds officially announced his April 30 retirement from office practice.  He also announced he does not intend to renew his medical license which expires at the end of December.

This means after April, unless a replacement is found, there will be no doctor holding regularly scheduled office hours in our clinic and after December no doctor will taking emergency calls and so-forth in Seldovia.

Isn’t it time for open and in-depth community discussion of the future of the City of Seldovia’s Clinic facilities?

Why else would this be an appropriate issue for discussion?

The answers to these questions might provide a hint: Will people feel secure for their health and that of their children with out a doctor present in the community? Will Seldovia prosper without continuation of a medical practice in the Clinic?  Will it Continue Reading

Made in Alaska WorkshopWhat a great opportunity for Seldovians!  A free workshop for business owners and marketers will be hosted in the Seldovia Conference Center at the ATC Building.  This is a fantastic chance to get great insight into marketing and promoting your business or service from those who know!
I had a chance to visit with Bill Webb about the program and the services his consulting firm will be providing at this upcoming event!
Gazette: Tell me more about your company and your mission?  How are you funded so that you can travel and support independent entrepreneurs throughout the state?
Bill:  Made in Alaska is a State of Alaska program, www.madeinalaska.org established in law and funded by the Department of Commerce.  Our annual budget is $108,000.  Webb’s Consulting & Management Services, Inc. is under contract to operate the program and has done so since 1999.  We put on five workshops each year.  One is always in Anchorage and the other four in different Alaska cities.
Gazette:  Will you be the one here in Seldovia teaching the class?
Bill:  Presenters in Seldovia this year will be Bill Webb and Dana Reese.  Bill is president of Webb’s Consulting & Management Services, Inc. as well as Program Continue Reading

SBE Future PrincipalThis will be the third time we have hosted the KPBSD for Principal/Teacher interviews in the last year.  Our current principal/teacher, Judy Standafer has given her notice, and will be leaving Seldovia at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.  So, we are on the lookout for a new principal for our beloved Susan B English school!

Since our family moved to Seldovia twelve years ago, we have seen 6 principals in our school!  We realize that Seldovia has always been a small school and the testing ground or beginning stop for some.  Our hope as parents has been to find the individual who wants to make Seldovia their home, our community and our students a long-term part of their life!  It is a trick, as most experienced administrators are “moving up” in the career, to bigger schools, larger staff, etc.

To me, I see this as an opportunity that is exceptional!

We have a beautiful school facility and a parent population that is very involved and interested in what is happening at the school.   The physical environment for Continue Reading
